How to Identify Mildew
Mildew typically appears as a flat, powdery growth on surfaces — often white, gray, or yellowish. It stays on the surface and does not penetrate into the material below. Mildew is most common on bathroom tile, grout, and shower curtains. It can be cleaned effectively with a bleach-based or commercial bathroom cleaner and a scrub brush. The smell is less intense than mold.
How to Identify Mold
Mold grows as a fuzzy or raised colony — often black, green, or dark gray on drywall, wood, or ceiling tiles. It penetrates into porous materials rather than staying on the surface. Mold has a stronger, more earthy odor than mildew. Attempting to wipe mold off a porous surface removes surface growth but not the hyphae that penetrate the material — the mold grows back.
Health Impact Differences
Mildew primarily causes respiratory irritation and is generally considered a less serious health concern than mold. Mold — particularly species like Stachybotrys, Aspergillus, and Cladosporidium — can cause more significant respiratory disease, allergic reactions, and in vulnerable populations, serious health outcomes. The presence of mold warrants more aggressive response than surface mildew.
