What Pathogens Are in Sewage Water?

Sewage water (Category 3 or black water) contains bacteria (E. coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Leptospira), viruses (Hepatitis A, Norovirus, Rotavirus), and parasites (Giardia, Cryptosporidium). Exposure through skin contact, inhalation of aerosolized droplets, or accidental ingestion can cause serious illness. Immunocompromised individuals, children, and the elderly are at highest risk.

Health Effects of Sewage Exposure

  • Gastrointestinal illness — nausea, vomiting, diarrhea from bacterial or viral contamination
  • Skin infections — particularly from open cuts or wounds in contact with sewage water
  • Respiratory illness — from inhaling aerosolized contaminated droplets or dried residue
  • Eye and ear infections — from direct contact
  • In severe cases, Hepatitis A, Leptospirosis, or septicemia

Safe Handling of Sewage Backup

Do not enter a sewage-affected area without: rubber boots, nitrile gloves to the elbow, N95 or higher respirator, safety goggles, and disposable coveralls. Professionals use higher levels of PPE. All contaminated materials — drywall, insulation, carpet, porous flooring — must be removed and disposed of as contaminated waste. The structural materials must be disinfected after removal and drying. Air quality testing should confirm decontamination before re-occupancy.
