Direct Insurance Billing

For covered insurance claims, most restoration companies work directly with your insurance company. You file a claim, an adjuster assesses the damage, and the restoration company's invoice is submitted to the insurer. The insurance company pays the restoration company directly (or issues a check jointly payable to you and the company). Your only out-of-pocket cost is your deductible.

Assignment of Benefits (AOB)

Some restoration companies ask homeowners to sign an Assignment of Benefits (AOB) — a document that transfers your insurance claim rights to the restoration company, allowing them to pursue payment directly from the insurer. AOB can expedite payment but reduces your control over the claims process. Some states have enacted AOB reform laws due to abuse. Read AOB documents carefully before signing.

Non-Covered or Out-of-Pocket Losses

For water damage not covered by insurance — either below your deductible or from a non-covered cause — you pay the restoration company directly. Get an itemized written estimate before work begins. Most reputable companies will provide a detailed scope of work with line-item pricing. Payment terms vary — ask whether payment is due on completion or in stages for larger jobs.
